How you doin’?

I’ve always been a bit annoyed with Massachusetts (and by “always” I REALLY mean the last three years).

I’m the kind of chap who will give a nod to strangers in passing.  When I lived out in the sticks of Minnesota, this was a common courtesy.  You nod, then there is a reply in the form of a similar nod, a “hello”, or maybe a slight raise of the hand off of their steering wheel.  People here, however, tend to pretend that we are about to have a conversation. Today, while riding my bike to work, I gave one of my nods to a construction worker.

“How you doin’?”

I doubt that he wanted to chat.  I don’t think he really wanted to know how I was doing…but he asked me anyway.  I like it better when words/phrases are used properly.

It was so frustrating that I literally killed myself.
